While Ariel Rubin plays her ukulele and tenor guitar with a seriousness that
is impressive, it is the strength and impact of her voice – which has been
compared to that of Feist, Florench Welch, and Norah Jones – that resonates
strongest with fans. Deeply rooted in the jazz, folk, and 1960s rock Rubin
grew up on, her songs bring to mind the soaring arrangements and gritty no-
nonsense lyrics of bands like Wilco and Bright Eyes. Undertow will be Rubin’s full album since the release of her first EP, Big Spoon, in 2011, and promises
to deliver even more of the “diverse range of music that's as orchestral as it
is sweeping” that last year left fans “hoping she’ll come back, soon, with a
full album.”
