Members of the Boston traditional music community, in conjunction with Club Passim, are presenting an acoustic benefit concert to celebrate the life and values of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. The concert will feature bluegrass, classical, Irish, old time, and other acoustic music traditions. Proceeds will support the Daniel Pearl Foundation, established by the Pearl family to support organizations that promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music, and innovative communication. The concert has attracted an honorary committee of luminaries in fields that were important to Daniel Pearl, including music, journalism, Middle Eastern studies, and social justice.
Why a Concert?
In addition to being a journalist, Daniel Pearl was an avid musician. He played fiddle, guitar, and mandolin in a variety of musical traditions, including bluegrass, blues, rock, and classical. As lead violinist for the Atlanta-based band The Ottoman Empire, he opened for the Kinks in 1993 and recorded a CD, Lester Square.
