Country Blues features a unique kind of guitar playing that calls on a strong sense of time. The right hand techniques teach you the skills to play syncopated dance rhythms that you can sing over. Even if you’re not planning on singing, you’ll still learn how to fingerpick, and how to play songs in open tunings with and without a slide.
Some of the techniques you will learn here are alternating bass, walking bass, right and left hand damping, melodic support and counterpoint. I’ll give you exercises to polish your right hand picking patterns and exercises to improve your slide playing. I’ll be teaching you these techniques through the songs of masters like Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, Son House, Scrapper Blackwell, Tampa Red, Skip James and others.
You should know the names of the strings and some basic chords and barre chords. A basic knowledge of fingerpicking is helpful. Bring your guitar, capo, slide and any picks you currently use. Audio recording is strongly encouraged.
